First, the methodology explained. Our panel of 51 experts each nominated their 50 finest Ashes performers. A scoring system—awarding 50 points for a first-place vote, 49 for second, and so forth—was used to compile the final list of 100. The criteria were straightforward: evaluation was based solely on Ashes performances, with judges free to apply their own interpretations. (Indeed, one voter included Gary Pratt.) The panel was required to select a minimum of 15 players from each nation and at least five from each of five defined historical periods: pre-World War I debuts; the interwar years; post-World War II through 1974; 1975 to 1999; and from the year 2000 to the present.
